From Grief to Grace

By Adaora Okoye

Through an encounter with the Daughters of Phanuel ministry, I was inspired to become a Blessed Encounters minister. During my family's grief after my father's passing, the Daughters of Phanuel’s prayers and quiet, compassionate presence at his memorial allowed us to experience the love of Christ and His Church. Their kindness comforted us and reminded us that Jesus walks with us even in the midst of sorrow and loss. That experience deeply touched my heart and awakened in me a desire to offer the same comfort, love, and presence to others in our church community who may be lonely, suffering or in need of support. So, when Carol and Evelyn spoke to me one day after Mass about Blessed Encounters, I felt it was a gentle invitation from Jesus and a path He was placing before me.

I have now been a Blessed Encounters minister for a little over a year, and it has been a tremendous blessing in my own faith journey. Through this ministry, I believe I have grown in compassion, empathy, and trust in God's work in the lives of His people. I have come to see that ministry is often not about having the right words or solutions, but about being present as Christ is present to us. Sometimes it means simply listening, offering a hand to hold, walking alongside someone through a difficult season, or being a companion on their journey of faith. Serving in this ministry has deepened my relationship with Christ and strengthened my understanding of what it means to love others as He loves us. In accompanying others, I have encountered Christ again and again, and I am continually reminded that God works powerfully through simple acts of prayer, presence, compassion and love.
