PRESCHOOL 2 GENERAL INFORMATION

The Preschool 2 Program is designed to build on the lessons learned in the Preschool 1 Program.  The lessons are similar in subject matter but are taught using more complex ideas and activities.

We begin each week with a hands-on activity to help the children feel comfortable in the classroom.  The activities range from a color page related to the lesson, playing play-doh or possibly putting a puzzle together with help from their classmates.

The focus then becomes the lesson of the day.  The children often hear a story related to the concept being taught; this is often followed with discussion time.  To reinforce the concepts learned we complete activities designed for the 4 – 5 year old child.  The goal is for the children to complete most or all activities on their own.  This helps children relate the activity to the lesson and also increases their self-confidence.

During each class we join for a group prayer activity. The prayers are intended to reinforce each lesson and encourage the children to thank God for his wonderful gifts.  In some prayers the children are asked to repeat a phrase, while others are designed for the children to respond with their own thoughts.  The Sign of the Cross is prayed each week too.

To conclude each lesson the main concepts are restated and the children are reminded about God’s wonderful world.  At this time the catechists are encouraged to offer a blessing to the children or finish with a scripture quote that encompasses the lesson. The books used are the I Am Special series published by Our Sunday Visitor.  You can get more information and other faith-filled activities for young children from the Our Sunday Visitor website @ www.osv.com
