KINDERGARTEN GENERAL INFORMATION
The Kindergarten Program is a bridge between the hands-on approach of preschool
to the more structure setting of the grade school program. In the
Faith First
program, we reintroduce the concept that God made the world and everything in
our lives. We then begin to explore basic Catholic concepts such as “we
belong to God’s family through baptism,” and “we belong to a Church family.”
We begin to explore God’s special book, the Bible, and spend some time learning
Bible stories.
We begin each week with a
hands-on activity to help the children feel comfortable in the classroom while
awaiting the arrival of all students. The activities range from an
activity page related to the lesson, playing play-doh, or possibly putting a
puzzle together with help from our friends.
The focus then becomes the
lesson of the day. The children will often hear a story related to the
concept being taught; this is often followed with discussion time. The
children will then complete an activity which reinforces the concepts discussed.
At this level children will move between listening, reading pages, and
completing pages (coloring, cutting, etc.) of student books. A craft is
completed, when appropriate, to reinforce what was learned.
During each class we join
for a group prayer activity. The prayers are intended to emphasize the
theme of the lesson and to encourage the children to thank God for his wonderful
gifts. In some prayers the children are asked to repeat a phrase, while
others are designed for the children to respond with their own thoughts.
At the kindergarten level, we will also begin to learn a few of the formal
Catholic prayers, such as the Hail Mary. The Sign of the Cross is prayed
with all prayers as well.
To conclude each lesson
the main concepts are restated and the children are reminded about God’s
wonderful world and our extended family—the Catholic Church. At this time
the teachers are encouraged to offer a blessing to the children or finish with a
scripture quote that covers the lesson.
